  3. leader, born in Shiraz, founder of Babism, an
  4. offshoot of Islam. In 1844 he proclaimed that
  5. he was a gateway to the Hidden Imam, a new
  6. messenger of Allah who was to come. He gained
  7. a large following whose activities caused the
  8. Persian authorities to fear a rebellion, and
  9. who were therefore persecuted. The Bab was
  10. executed for heresy.
